During March 2012, Queer Zagreb will hold three events in Zagreb to promote its latest book publications.

Film Program: Žigola

6. ožujka u 19h i 7. ožujka u 21h
Žigola / Gigola (Francuska, 2010.)
r: Laure Charpentier
uloge: Lou Doillon, Marie Kremer, Eduardo Noriega
Duration: 102 mins.

In the week which the International Day of Women is celebrated, Queer MoMents present another film treat: French lesbian melodrama ā€˜Gigola’, directed by Laure Charpentier. Situated in the underground lesbian scene of Paris’ sixties, the film is based on the long censored novel of the same name which, after 40 years very author managed to transfer into the big screen.

With the first scenes we witness infiltration of Georgina (Lou Doillon) in the underground lesbian community where she’s soon self-identified as Gigola. After the suicide of her girlfriend, Georgina discovers the vices of this underworld as the first female gigolo, sexy cross-dressing friend of the night while working in cabaret where wealthy lesbians seek fun and gender-bending escort girls. However, her relationship with them isn’t purely sexual in its nature. Gigola, having said goodbye to her former life, now befriends these women whom she consider her new family. While wearing elegant suits and drinking expensive drinks, combined with her attitude, Gigola becomes very close to the female idea of James Bond, even when she needs to carry a gun to confront the mob. At the same time, she remains the fantasy of every lesbian in this society.

ThroughoutĀ the course of the film, Gigola will replace several mistresses, with whom she’ll co-relate far differently one from another: from soft toy-girl to masculine dominatrix. With a series of very vivid sex scenes and scenario that ambiguously plays with sexuality ā€˜Gigola’ shows a certain connection even with softcore porn movies – although it’s far from them.

According to critics, it’s a fantastically naughty, funny and entertaining movie: uncompromisingly campy in it’s severity and representations of female passions, one of the rare new works that can be put under the etiquette of pulp-film, as well one of the most interesting queer films in the past year.

If you sufferer for a European chic sixties, and dare to go on a fantastic journey with a powerful and beautiful proto-sexual worker of the twentieth century, or simply want to look at attractive, gender-bending ladies in suits – ā€˜Gigola’ is a movie for you.

The film is scheduled for March 6th at 7PM and March 7th and 9PM, Kino Europa (VarŔavska 3).

Tickets can be bought at the venue at the date of screeings.

T-HT u Muzeju suvremene umjetnosti

'Kriegspiel' Damira Bartola IndoŔa i Tanje Vrvilo

‘Kriegspiel’ Damira Bartola IndoÅ”a i Tanje Vrvilo predstavlja inačicu Å”aha zasnovanom na Von Clausewitzovoj teoriji ratovanja i konkretnim Napoleonovim pohodima.

Damir Bartol IndoÅ” among the exhibitors at the show T-HT in the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Out of 249 submissions for the Exhibition T-HT at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Zagreb, 40 were selected. In this selection there is Damir Bartol IndoÅ”’s installation from the play ā€žKriegspielā€œ which was performed at last year’s Perforations Festival.

Damir Bartol IndoÅ”’es and Tanja Vrvilo’s ā€žKriegspielā€œ presents a version of chess based on Von Clausewitz theory of warfare and Napoleon’s specific campaigns. Although the patent of ā€žKriegspielā€œ did not become more popular than chess, in tight circles it remained a fascinating example of a combination of game and theoretical insights. Damir Bartol IndoÅ” has been for decades a unique phenomenon in the local performing scene, gazing into the horizon of philosophy and performance outcomes. Regardless of wether the priority is the movement, gesture, music or text, his pieces were always a game, and everything that is much more serious than the game.

Five works exhibited weren’t submitted but were selected by the curators ot the Museum of Contemporary Art as part of the exhibition T-HT. In this selection of 5 there was also the Croatian queer artist Silvio Vujičić which we remember for his zebra with colors of the rainbow from the setup ā€žTra/ns/vestijeā€œ which was an integral part of the Queer Zagreb Festival on 2004. The new instalation of Vujičić that is exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art consists of nine framed pieces and one physical object that changes during the exhibition, as transformations of material are the basis of Vujičić’s work.

Several pieces submitted to this year’s exhibition are dedicated to the character and work of Tomislav Gotovac, so this year’s T-HT release can be understood as a small homage to thisĀ  great artist whose uncompromising work has left and irreplaceable mark not only in Croatian, but also in international contemporary art.

The winning exhibition officially opened on February 24 and can be seen until March 25.

Njezin plodan i opsežan rad obuhvaća razne aktivnosti poput podučavanja filozofije i teologije, pisanje fikcije, kazaliÅ”nih predstava i filmova.

Susan Sontag’s Reborn published in Croatia by Queer Zagreb

Before her death, Susan Sontag confessed she had been in love nine times in her life. Five women, four men. However, she is better knownĀ for seminal works such as “Notes on ‘Camp’” (1964), in which she gestured towards the “so bad it’s good” in popular culture (the first intellectual to do so), and “On Photography” (1977), an essay analyzing the societal changes brought on by modern technology. Her prolific body of work included diverse activities such as teaching Philosophy and Theology, writing fiction and theater plays, and films.

She had always seen herself primarily as a novelist, her storytelling and essay writing being championed at different moments and with great attention. Such attention as to elevate her to cult status both in the academia and in the arts world. Attention which she used in her political activism to bring to the eyes of the international community important events as the Vietnam War and the Siege of Sarajevo. She lived in the Bosnian capital for many months during the siege and directed Samuel Beckett’s theater play “Waiting for Godot” in the surrounded town.

Essayist, literary and cultural theorist, icon, and political activist, Susan is one of the most interesting 20th century figures.

This is the beginning. These are her diaries.
